Tactics for Successful Intervention
1. Ask about tobacco use Identify and document tobacco use status for every patient at every visit.
2. Advise to quit In a clear, strong and personalized manner, urge the patient to quit.
3. Assess willingness to make a quit attempt Is the tobacco user willing to attempt quitting at this time?
4. Assist in quit attempt Use counseling and pharmacotherapy to help patients willing to make a quit attempt.
5. Arrange follow-up Schedule follow-up contact, preferably within the first week after quit date.

Ask about tobacco use

  • Front office staff: ask as part of routine check-in, i.e. address changes, insurer changes, etc.
  • Nursing staff: ask as part of vital signs check.
  • Physician/PA/NP: ask as part of exam

Advise to quit

  • "As your physician, I strongly advise you to stop smoking now."
  • "Quitting smoking is the number one thing you need to concentrate on to improve your health."
  • "Your smoking is putting your child at risk for SIDS."
  • "Your smoking is a major factor in your child's asthma complications."
  • "Your smoking paired with diabetes is putting you at high risk for coronary heart disease and/or amputations."

Assess willingness to make a quit attempt

  • "Are you ready to stop smoking?"
  • "Are you prepared to set a quit date today?"
  • "What have you done to stop smoking?"

Assist in quit attempt

  • "Refer to "Idaho Quitline: U can do it!" -- (888) 280-2265 -- via prescription pad, fax referral, or patient prompt card.
  • Write prescription for patient appropriate pharmacotherapy.
  • Refer to the Idaho QuitNet at www.Idahoquitnet.com.
  • Refer to local Health Department cessation counseling classes.
  • Ask current cessation status at every visit.
